OUR ETHOS

LANDSCAPE FIRST
Barnaby Black begins with real places. The Pine Barrens of Long Island. Desert washes in the Southwest. Coastal forests, mountain meadows, tidal edges. These aren't mood boards or abstract inspiration — they're the actual source. Every product starts with time spent in a specific landscape, learning what grows there, what it smells like after rain, what the air carries at dusk. Fragrance follows place. It has never worked the other way around.
WILDCRAFTING
Before anything is distilled or blended, it has to be gathered. Wildcrafting is the practice of harvesting plants and aromatic materials directly from the landscapes that produce them — responsibly, selectively, and with attention to what the land can sustain. We gather only what we need, from places we know well, in quantities that leave the stand intact. This isn't foraging as trend. It's the foundational step that makes everything that follows honest.

DISTILLATION
Raw plant material becomes fragrance through steam distillation — a process as old as perfumery itself. We distill botanicals in small runs, working directly with the plant material we've gathered or sourced from growers we trust. The result is essential oil and hydrosol that carry the actual chemistry of the plant, not a synthetic approximation of it. What goes into the still determines everything that comes out.
SMALL BATCHES
Every Barnaby Black product is formulated, poured, blended, labeled, and packaged by hand in deliberately limited quantities. Small batches aren't a marketing position — they're a practical commitment to quality control and attention. When you make less, you can pay closer attention to each one. We have no interest in scaling past the point where that's possible.
MADE TO BE USED
Barnaby Black products are not precious objects. They are not meant to sit on a shelf and look good. They belong in bathrooms and backpacks, on campsite tables and cabin windowsills, in coat pockets and daily rituals. A fragrance that never gets worn, a salve that never gets opened, a candle that never gets lit — these are failures. Use everything.

STEWARDSHIP
The landscapes that supply our inspiration and our materials are not props. They are not aesthetic backdrops for product photography. They are living systems that require more care than they typically receive. We take that seriously — in how we gather, in how we source, in how we talk about the places that make this work possible. Wilderness is not a brand asset. It's a responsibility.
The landscape always comes first. Everything else follows.
