A fragrance study built from the dark materials of the hollow. Inspired by the famous yarn by Washington Irving.

Marsten & Marwood is the curious collection of peculiar fragrances handmade by Barnaby Black. Sleepy Hollow is anchored by a spruce-resin tincture, a mushroom tincture, and oakmoss gathered in the historic Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in upstate New York.

The result is resinous, green, earthy, oddly sweet and quietly strange. Spruce needle, fir balsam, Virginia cedarwood, patchouli, labdanum, Haitian vetiver, and hay absolute give the woods their shape. Tobacco, benzoin, olibanum, birch tar, and dark spice bring the old house closer.

The Accords

Sleepy Hollow is built in five accords, each one a small piece of the landscape. Together they move from orchard fruit and fallen leaves into damp woods, autumn fields, and the smoke of an old folklore.

• Orchard Apple: A green, aromatic impression of fruit still on the tree, with Roman chamomile, Green Cognac, davana, and juniper.
• Sleepy Hollow Cemetery: The cool, earthy depth of the grounds, shaped by spruce resin, mushroom, moss, and the impression of grave soil.
• Leaf Tannin: The dry, dark character of fallen leaves, drawn from oak gall, black tea, and walnut leaf.
• Autumn Field: A softer stretch of sweet vernal grass and hay, warmed by tobacco and ambrette.
• Gunpowder: A flash of black pepper, olibanum, cade, and charred birch, leaving a smoky trace.
