Passage of Darkness

Marsten & Marwood is the curious collection of peculiar fragrances handmade by Barnaby Black. Formulated with natural aromatics, raw botanicals, and fine fragrance materials, each scent is a small study in place, memory, and atmosphere.

Dark comes the night, cloaked in spice, leather, and smoke. Passage of Darkness is an elixir imagined from folklore, born in rum-soaked taverns where spice merchants traded stories under lantern light on islands warmed by ocean air. It is shadow and flame, mystery and revelation.

The Scent

Grapefruit peel and citron cut sharply through the dusk before giving way to green and red cedar, amyris, bay leaf, and a rare spice accord. As the night matures, Haitian vetiver, myrrh, and dark patchouli unfurl. Cocoa and tonka bean remain on the skin like the last light in a locked room.

Fragrance Structure

• Top: grapefruit peel, citron, black pepper, and coriander
• Heart: green cedar, red cedar heartwood, amyris, West Indies bay leaf, illicium, allspice liqueur, and cardamom
• Base: Haitian vetiver, myrrh, dark patchouli, cocoa, and tonka bean

Materials & Concentration

• Parfum extrait compounded at 45%
• Organic grain alcohol, live plant and tree infusions, steam-distilled essential oils, compounds, absolutes, and other fine botanical concentrates
• Tonka bean and illicium leaf absolutes extracted in the workshop using grain alcohol
